rhivolution: Abed from Community with his camcorder (pop culture/film = OTP: Abed Nadir)
Mah Festivid, let me show you it. Meta is forthcoming on this one. A lot of meta. This vid did not come easy.

Title: Worlds Apart
Vidder: Rhi ([personal profile] rhivolution/[livejournal.com profile] rhipowered)
Fandom: Stargate (1994 film)
Music: Bruce Springsteen (with vocal guests Asif Ali Khan and Group), "Worlds Apart"
Warnings: science-fiction violence/warfare
Length: 4:16
Summary: The Stargate: building bridges or burning them?
Notes: Made in Final Cut Essentials with the help of VisualHub, for [livejournal.com profile] dkwilliams in Festivids 2011. Beta by [personal profile] sqbr. English subtitles will be available later, watch this space!

rhivolution: Abed from Community with his camcorder (pop culture/film = OTP: Abed Nadir)
I must confess to not having a ton of experience with a goodly proportion of the fandoms on offer this year, thus the shortness of the list at the moment. sheepish rhi is sheepish.

Anyway, these are recs that will appeal to everyone, not just you vid aficionados. I promise.

Doctor Who (old skool)

Another Girl, Another Planet (Ace)
This is all about Ace, and it's therefore necessarily full of attitude and charm and blowing shit up and beating Daleks with a baseball bat. You may think you know this story, but the vidder makes it work well, particularly with the music, which is delightful. My only complaint is that there isn't moar footage from Ghost Light.

Awake My Soul (Sarah Jane)
I saw [personal profile] azarsuerte mention this more than once as she was the recip, and finally went to watch. Yes, it is deliberately manipulating you into wonder and amazement and weepiness. No, I do not care. It starts slow, but hits its stride about a minute and a half in and doesn't let up.

Maru the cat (YouTube)

Outside the Box (Maru/boxes)
This manages to tick the boxes of being absolutely ridiculous and hilarious while being moving almost to tears. This vidder knows hir stuff, and points have to go to Maru's human for the source material being so good.

Moulin Rouge

Ooh La La! (Christian/Satine)
Having been subjected to Goldfrapp's 'Ooh La La' about twenty million times lately in car adverts, I came into this a sceptic. I walked out stunned. It's rhythmically brilliant and heartbreakingly wonderful, and now I remember why I paid to see the film five times even though I was a high school student.

Master and Commander

Ship of Fools (Maturin [Aubrey/Maturin])
I really appreciate the gorgeous film work of Peter Weir and his team, and I also really appreciate vidders who use classic rock artists to great effect. This is a gorgeous tribute to Stephen Maturin. Old school TR people, I advise you to watch only when you're in an okay frame of mind, as it is possibly a bit painful.
rhivolution: Matthew Macfadyen is pensive, text: jeux sans frontieres (games without frontiers: Tom Quinn)
I got two vids this year, I am SO excite, you have no idea. And both are early Spooks/MI:5 and both are utterly bloody amazing.

Running Up That Hill is using the Placebo cover of that song, which is an automatic sucker punch to the gut, and it's about Tom and Zoe and Danny, which is like a second sucker punch immediately following that, knocking the wind out of you. Except the emotional resonance isn't cheap at all, the vid is amazingly constructed, and the topics are still relevant, nearly a decade on, particularly in light of modern issues in Britain.

Also, pretty. And heart-breaking. And with the best guest stars from the period (Tony Head! Siddig El Fadil!) As I said in my comment, this is the TomZoeDanny vid I wanted in my head, subconsciously.

Adagio for Strings takes Harry and Ruth from S1-S5 and plays with the facets of their interactions to a beautifully fitting wordless Tiësto track. While touching on the Harry/Ruth or Harry&Ruth relationship, I found the bigger point of this vid to be more RUTH IS FUCKING BADASS AND HAS ALWAYS BEEN BADASS, which is just as cool as shipping and far less common of late considering where canon went.

The construction of this one is simply phenomenal. I wish I could make something half as good.

(Please note: The vidders did not provide warnings, but I advise wrt both vids that the nature of canon includes institutional violence, gun violence, and suicide.)

So yes, if you know Spooks at all, or even just know Modern British Drama at all, or in the case of Running, have any interest in what I think could possibly be a subtle critique of British institutional power structures or maybe I just think too much...go, watch, leave feedback.

And go watch other vids!

RP and other stuff set on hold while I finish tweaking my Festivid submission.

ma festivid let me show you it
rhivolution: concerned Eleventh Doctor and Idris, with text: 'nothing is impossible as long as we're alive' (unfettered and alive: Doctor/Idris)
Having received THIRTEEN I Surrender comments, I am now calling it closed this go. Sorry. Your response may take a few days (weeks) to get to, at this rate, but I will do them all eventually or give you a good reason why not.

A bit nervous about Festivids as I only matched on one fandom, but I will be okay, I think. I've got a direction I want to go in with the vid, and I think the recip will be okay with that.

Nothing more productive today, though--I have had either a nasty migraine or high levels of anxiety or utter exhaustion all day today and just Cannot Cope. My apologies. I will try to deal with life tomorrow.
rhivolution: Abed from Community with his camcorder (pop culture/film = OTP: Abed Nadir)
Howdy! Thanks for doing what you do, you are great. I may just start here for now and carry on a bit more tomorrow. And how much do I love that someone nominated Born in Flames? I love you, Born in Flames person!

A few general things to start with: I'm a big fan of classic rock and music produced between 1963 and 1989 in general, though not exclusively by any means. (My last.fm charts are here.)

This does not mean you need to use my favourite music, but I really appreciate vids that are done to songs that the vidder loves, and to songs which are fairly rare in vidding, just like these fandoms are rare.

I'm also deeply appreciative of critical and revisionist fanworks, so don't hesitate to go there if you like.

I'm not super fond of fluff, though you'll notice that some of these vid choices lend themselves well to sweetness and/or crack, and I've said as much.

Carrying on:

reruns all become our history, to borrow a phrase. )
Thanks so much,
Rhi xx
rhivolution: Gwen and Morgana from BBC Merlin, giving each other a sidelong look (grace to the strong: Gwen/Morgana)
Title: Cold War
Vidder: Rhi ([personal profile] rhivolution/[livejournal.com profile] rhipowered)
Fandom: Merlin (BBC) (series 1 & 2)
Music: Janelle Monáe, "Cold War"
Warnings: non-graphic violence, brief scene of domestic violence
Length: 3:35
Summary: Struggling against Uther's anti-magic bigotry is as hard on Gwen and Morgana as it is on Merlin; in fact, perhaps even harder.
Notes: Made in Final Cut Essentials with the help of VisualHub, for the [community profile] wiscon_vidparty at WisCon 35. Beta by [personal profile] futuransky, with special thanks to [personal profile] astro_noms.

If you are one of those fortunate and lucky souls, might I encourage you to drop in at [community profile] wiscon_vidparty?

There are many awesome vids, it is coordinated by awesome people, and while I am not there, I am premièring my Merlin vid at it. Otherwise you will have to watch it streaming from Vimeo like all of the rest of us.

So yes. You should go to there if you get a chance. I also suggest going by the Carl Brandon Society party and the Think Galactic party where the awesome Andrea Hairston will also be located.

oi vidders

Could anyone really quickly beta (read: in the next 24 hours) my Morgana/Gwen vid? I will love you and give you credit and kittens, though I do not guarantee I will make all of the changes you specify.

it is donnnnnnnnnnne.
rhivolution: Gwen and Morgana from BBC Merlin, giving each other a sidelong look (grace to the strong: Gwen/Morgana)
I'm in the place on this vid where I really, really like what I have in most places. That is a good place to be.

Thanks for the cheerleading, I may need a bit more.

Now watching 'The Hand of Fear' to help remember Elisabeth Sladen. Bless.

Dear self,

Next time you think you've converted all your AVI files to Final Cut ready DV, actually make sure you have instead of just making MORE AVI FILES.

[sighs as this fanvid has already been delayed, is coming together quickly, but needs to be faster]

This will be gorgeous, if it ever gets done.

Love,
you
rhivolution: Beverly Crusher in the captain's chair. Text reads 'Status report: no fucks left to give.' (all the fucks I do not give: Beverly Cru)
I finished subtitling Parallel Lines this evening, so it's now available to stream or download an SRT file.

(Comments are gold, btw.)

Title: Parallel Lines
Vidder: Rhi ([personal profile] rhivolution/[livejournal.com profile] rhipowered)
Fandom: Star Trek: The Next Generation
Music: Lindsey Buckingham, "Love Runs Deeper"
Warnings: none
Length: 3:29
Summary: Sometimes love runs underneath the stories we know.
Notes: Made in Final Cut Essentials with the help of ffmpegx and VisualHub. Made for [personal profile] tellitslant and [personal profile] carawj's Femslash show at Vidukon 2011. rhivolution: Kate Beaton's fat Shetland pony; text: ride like the wind (O HAI PONY: Hark a Vagrant)
Near the end of the Tarot/Tree of Life arc in Alan Moore's Promethea, and I really don't understand how anyone could read this without Wikipedia. I keep having to look stuff up. It's also so fucking didactic--if it were just the travel narrative, that'd be fine, but then you keep getting hit with the splainy stick of Neopaganism and it's just like SHUT UPPP.

I still like Promethea better than his other stuff. And we now have confirmation that Sophie Bangs is indeed Latina, so someone should add her to the chromatic heroes list and write fic because I say. Though you'd have to read through all the above wtfery. The art (Williams III) is gorgeous, if that helps.

I don't really have an appropriate comics icon yet (cannot decide on the right person: Martha Washington? Kate Godwin? Dr Faiza Hussain? all of the above?), so I will use Fat Pony.

Off topic: If you like vids (or Minority Report or Merlin), please check out my poll from yesterday. You don't have to be a WisCon person, my vids are for the public in the long run.
rhivolution: Karen Gillian dressed as Amy Pond faces off against a TV camera (me versus the camera: Karen Gillan)
Seeing as I'm still jobless, I have time to actually do a bespoke vid for WisCon so that some little bit of me will be there. BUT I CANNOT CHOOSE.

So, precogs breaking my heart, aka I deconstruct Spielberg? Or Morgana and Gwen raging against the Uther machine?

Or am I completely off base entirely?

I'd rather see this vid made:

I'd like to see something different:

I have other comments:

rhivolution: Mulder's I Want To Believe poster from X-Files, with a TARDIS in place of the spaceship (I want to believe: X-Files/TARDIS)
Offers are now open at [community profile] help_japan on Dreamwidth!

I am offering a custom-made vid, which you can bid on here.

Some other nifty people (including people you know!) are offering stuff, so go have a look. If you still want to make an offer yourself, that remains open as well.

thud.

rhivolution: band tour shirt showing Captain Picard with a guitar. Text is 'Darmok and Jalad at Tanagra September 1991' (language geek: TANAGRA '91!)
As [personal profile] giandujakiss commented today, you get really thinky about stuff when you make a vid, and in the case of Festivids, you can't say anything until later. Sigh. Not sure if anyone cares, mind, but I do, so I'm writing it.

This may be a bit disjointed, me having been up until 3:45. Sorry. It turns far more into Star Trek meta than notes on a vid, so read if you're interested in that instead.

Notes on 'Resistance'
Hello, darkness, my old friend. )
rhivolution: Picard and Beverly get close in the TNG ep 'Attached' (UST; don't leave home without it: Picard)
Title: Resistance
Vidder: Rhi ([personal profile] rhivolution/[livejournal.com profile] rhipowered)
Fandom: Star Trek: The Next Generation
Music: Simon and Garfunkel, "The Sound of Silence"
Warnings: Some disturbing images regarding body modification, some violence.
Length: 3:08
Summary: 0.68 seconds -- for an android, nearly an eternity.
Notes: Made in Final Cut Essentials with the help of ffmpegx and VisualHub. For [livejournal.com profile] sweetestdrain in Festivids 2010, who asked for a TNG vid focusing on Data. I cheated a little and used First Contact...m'bad. Beta by [personal profile] geekgirl.

rhivolution: Abed from Community with his camcorder (pop culture/film = OTP: Abed Nadir)
Does anyone want to look over the draft of the vid I'm gifting to [personal profile] tellitslant? (Don't worry, it's not a secret.)

Star Trek: TNG, Beverly/Deanna mostly, no particular triggers. Lindsey Buckingham on music.
