As ever, things make a post.

- content warning: mental health )

- On that note, I've been working on a real name blog post for like, three weeks now, and I swear it will soon be done. It's just...it feels like my writing is disjointed, all bits and pieces (ze says, writing a goddamn list post).

- Also on that note, what do you do when the place you end up in, after long consideration, is on the fucking fence? What use are you then? Do you just nope out of things for the future and be considered useless by all parties? /cannot cope

- In light of the sad news about Jonathan Crombie's death, I'm a bit spooked by my recent Festivid choices and look at AGG fandom. I sort of want to rewatch the vid (and the canon, now that I have a copy), but I think it'll make me sad. He embodied Gilbert for me, just as Megan Follows is Anne and Schuyler Grant is Diana; I had the Anne of Green Gables miniseries fotonovel when I was a kid, so they're sort of indelibly impressed on my mind and were long before this vid. My heart goes out to his family and friends.

- I am not gonna talk about Star Wars or Daredevil because I do not want to be Captain Buzzkill. I will talk about Welcome to Night Vale with any and all comers, though!

- I would like to vid a whole bunch of snarky multi-Doctor DW vids, as I've been watching a bunch of old!skool Who thanks to the Horror channel* going Freeview recently. I get daunted as hell by the size of the canon, though, by the amount of stuff I would need to acquire and log/mine for detail. Suffice it to say, I have lots of DW feels again...they're just not new!Who feels, which is a bit strange.

* 'Horror' is really just a catchall for 'speculative fiction'. Right now they're trying to convince me that The Stand is scary, which it is, but not how they think. God, I love that story, even with its faults. I even love that mini, though some of it is painfully bad. Gary Sinise makes up for a lot. A LOT.
rhivolution: David Tennant does the Thinker (Default)
Rather liked Day of the Doctor. Not without its issues; I have come to accept it's never not going to be problematic. But as a whole: very well-constructed, some rather clever takes on Davies-era and old skool Who style, Clara being useful instead of standing around being ~special~, limited angst around Billie Piper's return. A very subtle Scotland joke in there, blink and you'll miss it. And Jemma Redgrave!

And truth is, I probably liked it so well because I remembered why I do so love Ten. I miss being Ten.

spoilers. )
But overall, it was a damn sight better than I anticipated and a very good tribute. Worth a watch, says me.

Firstly! Thanks to everyone who commented on my last posts about excite news. Anxiety's prevented me from thanking individually but yes. You are lovely.

Now, for Doctor Who! The Bells of St John's--not bad. Not the bestest thing I have ever seen on TV, but then again Brand New Companion stories aren't for me, in my experience.

In pros/cons:
+ I like Clara, she is quite good.
+ Low fail content!
+ A good chunk of creepy!
+ A not wack Amy shoutout!
+/- Interesting use of Data Stuff Overlay, though I felt a little odd about it because I see it as such a Sherlock thing and therefore not really an ostensibly-kids-show thing? If that makes sense.
+/- It's not spoilery to say that Moff's Problem With Twitter makes a brief and very deliberate 'did they just say what I thought they said' appearance. (Actually, I wonder if the whole damn theme of the episode isn't sort of an extension of that Problem, but I could write meta on it and I need to do other things this evening.)
- As usual (regardless of showrunner), plot pacing and tension is an issue. You'll know what I mean when you finish the episode.

Spoilers for the 50th anniversary, if you missed it earlier on Twitter. Contains RP angst. )

YES EVEN GRUMPY ME HAS THE FEELS OKAY? YES I HAVE FEELS.

Also, cleverly constructed, I must say. I anticipate all the fanfic, preferably written by [personal profile] ar because spoilers. )

In the meantime, to cheer you up, I ARE MEDIA ELITE: Cookie Monster and Elmo take a look at this summer's TV/film trends for Entertainment Weekly. In song. Look for fantastic uses of Major Accent highlighters.

A few wee points before I go make myself a snack:

- Tepper's The Visitor, in synopsis:

PEOPLE: [do stuff]
APOCALYPSE: [happens]
PEOPLE: [do stuff]
WEIRD SHIT: [happens]

could have been better. I've enjoyed some of her lesser books more, mostly because I found the setting/characters hard to relate to. a bit spoilery in the vague sense )

- [personal profile] alexandraerin has it right on the nose with what bugged me about DW Xmas this year--namely, she notes the unclear gender stuff, whether or not Moff is taking the piss. (spoilers)

- I've got both mine in TR New Year's top levels, should you be interested! Going to meet reqs despite failing most of the month with work stress.

Happy Gregorian New Year's Eve!

Back from Yorkshire. My apologies for the radio silence on all but email and Twitter, but there were issues with the wifi setup and Matt appropriated my work-issue mobile broadband dongle* for most of the time there.

Oh hell, I say that, but it was admittedly a bit of a breather from fandom and RP and SJ and whatever, but it also means I got fuck-all done on my Festivid. shiiiiiiiiit. And I have to work tomorrow. I'm hoping like hell that things will be quiet. shiiiiiiiiit.

I need to update my paid account here at Dreamwidth. Hmm.

Doctor Who was spoilers. )

I need to watch the rest of Sherlock by the end of the week so I'm ready for the new year. Now that DW Christmas is done, it's all.over.the.place. promo-wise.

Anyway, should anyone still be interested, I still have the Classic Rock Christmas mix for you.

And should anyone still be interested, I have TR reqs to make this month.

* For those who don't know, this is actually the name of the device--dongle. I am not making this up.

Right, so that was okay. Matt thinks it was all really good and clever and I am just...okay? Not bad, not disappointed particularly, just okay. I think the problem I have with new Who in general is that it does too much buildup prior to the final episode, and then the final episode always sort of feels anti-climactic to me because it cannot up the ante.

So please do not come down on my head like a ton of bricks because I am not saying I hated it.

spoilers. )

Okay, the more I think about it, the happier I am with it. But not pee-pants thrilled, is all.

This is a post about how awesome Amara Karan is and how Rita is brilliant.

Talk. I will have things to say tomorrow as it is late, but I want a Rita love post.

Oh, PONDS.

yeah, pretty much convinced that Moff rewrote a chunk of that episode, or Macrae learned to write about human relationships somewhere in the last few years. it smells of Moff, to be honest.

FYI, while LJ is apparently LOADING, it's not letting me SEE any posts. This seriously does a number on my RPing, as it likely has for many of you too. So I apologise for not responding to tags, but if I can't even see them to confirm they've gone through, I don't see much of a point.

And I wanted to do a Doctor EP, dammit.

Speaking of, Doctor Who S6b SDCC trailer isn't as inspiring as I anticipated--it's interesting, but not heartbreaking like I would want it to be and like the ones from S6a were. It's also not particularly...idek, coherent, in my mind; it does have a few threads I'd like to pull, but I have to wonder if I'm the only fan who is sick of spoiler ). We get it already, Moff, you are good at scary stuff or something.

Finally, two points regarding current events here in Europe:
- White people can be terrorists; also, this does not mean they are necessarily crazy.
- Yes, on a certain level, what happens to addicts is their own fault. But that doesn't mean that they deserve what happens.

Feeling disheartened about UK media, really, with the announcement that there will not be a full DW series in 2012 (though the 14 episode Matt Smith commission apparently still stands) and my suspicions that the Private Eye gossip expose had some truth in it.

It's disheartening to think that the management at BBC Wales is shitty, frankly, because that spells danger for a lot of other good things (e.g. Merlin, though Merlin has the benefit of having indie production company Shine behind it as well). If this is how you treat one of your big deals that's doing remarkably well abroad...idek.

Dumbassery, however, abounds on the exec producer level...those people never seem to actually know what a show needs or actually understand what the commissioners or public want either.

That said, to the person who thinks DW has a bunch of money because of the massive merchandising..that's not how it works. The BBC is in a bind, due to the economy and the Tories, a serious, serious cash bind. That merch money is first of all, planned for, and secondly, doesn't necessarily go back into the show. It goes into the BBC pot and maybe saves a Gardeners' World presenter from losing hir job, or funds a BBC Four docudrama, or prints another issue of Top Gear magazine.

So. Quite disappointed. Rarely before has my Karen Gillan vs. the camera image seemed more fitting. Though the DT 'arse' icon was a close second.

ETA: I should note that this comes hot on the heels of news that the BBC will be selling the iconic Television Centre building in London once they move to their new digs in Salford. Personally, I could care less about this bit, as I am so very for the decentralising of UK media production, and feel this would be a great step, but I'm not emotionally invested in TVC like a native Briton. In context, also having to admit to the UK public this week that you can't manage to put together another full series of one of your top-of-the-line and publicity/emotionally vital shows does not bode well for the sitch at the Beeb.

I've been processing, trying to figure out why I'm so...disconcerted by the whole Doctor Who thing. I mean, I'm good with the big picture, and the episode was very good, but I'm also a bit sick at heart. Part of it is that there's always a bit of a let-down with knowing the answer to a big question, but I think it's mainly because with where things stand at the moment, the humans get a massively raw deal.

And so I am finding it hard to glee because I am just WIBBLE.

Spoilers. )

Basically, it's all really painful and depressing if you take it apart.

As consolation, I would like a shitload of fun stories about not really spoilery but ep-related, so. )

Well, that all makes sense. And doesn't. And we do know who the good man is.

one spoiler-tastic point... )

Like when cleaning the bathroom.

Doctor Who speculation. Spoilers, but very little that you wouldn't know if you're not caught up to today. )

At least I have alcoholic ginger beer for after the episode.
rhivolution: Terezi from Homestuck flying with her rocket wings (coolkid justice: Terezi (Homestuck))
For starters, anyone who was fond of early Merlin or is currently fond of Merlin, or hell, likes Janelle MonĂ¡e, I'd love more feedback on Cold War.

Secondly, a combination of RP, the title of next week's Doctor Who, watching some Three and Five serials, and this video (music NSFW) wherein Old Skool Doctor Shoots Things...makes me really want to write meta about how the Doctor is not really a good person and that is okay. He wants to be a good person. But he's not.

Sadly, this is something that New Who has often glossed over, and a fallacy into which I have fallen myself.

Point the third: work is going okay. It's stuff I'm capable of doing and the people are nice, I just need to adjust to the energy drain that comes from an 8.5 hour day.

four, not about Doctor Who but about fandom...vaguely squeeharshing. )

Five: Anyone who follows Homestuck will know why I am using this (Dreamwidth) icon. sigh.
rhivolution: Karen Gillian dressed as Amy Pond faces off against a TV camera (me versus the camera: Karen Gillan)
I await my part of fandom jumping all over this stuff, and as I said--really good plotarc fodder with strong implications.

Spoilers. )
All in all, very sweet but not saccharine.

ETA: Also, spoiler. )

ETA again because I forgot due to a throwaway line, until [personal profile] tellitslant RTed Roz Kaveney: everything after the first minute of this ep is a spoiler. )
