I finished subtitling Parallel Lines this evening, so it's now available to stream or download an SRT file.

As [personal profile] giandujakiss commented today, you get really thinky about stuff when you make a vid, and in the case of Festivids, you can't say anything until later. Sigh. Not sure if anyone cares, mind, but I do, so I'm writing it.

This may be a bit disjointed, me having been up until 3:45. Sorry. It turns far more into Star Trek meta than notes on a vid, so read if you're interested in that instead.

It seems reality insists on proving to my OCD complexes that the Packers will win if I am not watching them. DAMN YOU REALITY.

Meanwhile, I'm experiencing further mental dissonance due to YAY PACKERS SUPER BOWL and making a cheery Beverly/Deanna vid to Lindsey Buckingham's "Love Runs Deeper" at the same time as massive RP bleed lends itself to woeful female singers (Lissie, Amy Macdonald).

I roughed out the first minute of the vid, though. Go me, though I'm terrified that I'm far too fast a vidder. It works better than I imagined, but it's fucking impossible to get scenes of Beverly and Deanna together NOT in Ten-Forward. Damn TNG and its fail.

Fandom needs more vidding to Fleetwood Mac and sundry members, by the way. I'm not sure what I'd have to do to get people to do so.

So, in Sunshine on Leith, I threw in a minor character who is both human and genderqueer/non-binary/neutrois.*

Because seriously, I started thinking a little about all the SF fandoms I love--now, admittedly, I run in particular circles, but in the future, why the fuck aren't there more humans of non-binary gender?

Okay--I freely admit this is a completely rhetorical question. I know why there aren't more characters in canon or fic, because much as it sucks, the concepts are not considered mainstream in the dominant paradigm and many people are afraid to write about them for fear of doin it rong. Still, I have half a mind to put it to a challenge and set it forth in [community profile] transfic or something.

Though then I'd have to write a 101 and things and I just do not know.

* Which of these, I'm not sure. Dr Ayala says it's none of my business as we only know per in a professional context. Also, I don't know how Gaila knew per is per pronoun...handwavey magic!

Whee, the Where No Woman New Year Exchange reveal was early, because it's a holiday weekend in the US.* I wrote AOS sorta-femslash for the first time ever...

Title: Sunshine on Leith
Author: [personal profile] rhivolution ([archiveofourown.org profile] rhi)
Fandom: Star Trek AOS
Rating: PG-13
Warnings: (skip) Non-explicit references to slavery and non-consensual sex.
Summary: The turning of a year: what happened to Gaila and Uhura between the fall of Nero and the relaunch of Enterprise.
Notes: Written for [archiveofourown.org profile] lilbreck in the Where No Woman NYE. Additional notes in end of text at AO3. 4078 words.

------

There is totally a fanmix coming for this one, as well as an annotated version. 'Cause while it is only 4K, for me that is Epic Fic, and a lot of thinking went into this one, including consideration of disability and Trek's Issues with aliens. And, uh, the Proclaimers. Shut up.

Also, I've only had one drabble requested for my More Joy Day giveathon. MOAR DRABBLE REQUESTS PLEASE.

* Fun fact: we never got MLK Day off when I was in school, it being classed as an observance day in Wisconsin public schools. I believe each district determines whether or not it's a day off.

So, the [livejournal.com profile] where_no_woman New Year Exchange posts were up today, and I gotta take a moment to rec what I received because it is just what I asked for:
Revolution (at AO3) by [archiveofourown.org profile] syredronning (Star Trek: DS9, G, Jadzia Dax/Lenara Kahn)

It's an ace femslash story that's an AU from 'Rejoined', and it has politics and what cultural studies geek me calls 'secondary source material' in it, which I love. Go forth!

By the way, there's more really good fic in this exchange (and I'm not just saying this because I've got one in there, I swear). There's Trek of the TOS, AOS, TNG and DS9 varieties, so even if you're not an AOS fan, have a look.

If you can guess mine before next week's reveal, you'll get...something. I don't know what yet.

Title: Iowa Stubborn (parts 1&2)
Fandom: Star Trek: AOS
Rating: PG
Length: 1468 words
Characters: Gen; Winona, Sam, and Jim Kirk.
Notes: AU where Winona Kirk is of Tamil descent, written for the [community profile] dark_agenda Racebending Revenge Ficathon. Beta by [personal profile] boosette. Further notes on my concept and research are here at AO3. If you have concerns about this fic or find it problematic, please let me know. I would like to listen and revise my work.
Summary: Nila Kirk has no good reason to return permanently to Riverside, Iowa. She does, anyway.

(Meta post later.)

Okay, so I'm doing a Star Trek AOS fic for [community profile] dark_agenda's Racebending. At the moment, my intent is that Winona-whose-name-is-no-longer-that Kirk is of Tamil descent*, and that Sam and Jim are multiracial.

It's probably obvious that I'm grappling with appropriate representation of both a future Tamil diaspora and multiracial people. (...still looking for cultural betas, by the way, if anyone has the energy/spoons.)

But basically spoiling the whole concept: on race and the Federation. )
