Really pleased to tell you that Friends of Dennis, a fan project that dear [personal profile] wrdnrd and [personal profile] raanve have been putting together, has gone live.

Friends of Dennis deals with class and classism in speculative literature and is definitely worth watching if you're into SFF.

Much win!

Thinky thoughts--if I were to make a community on Dreamwidth for expatriate people in the UK, would anyone join it?

Thing is, there are a bunch of issues here:
- the obviously vastly different experiences for people of different races
- the class/race divide between being expatriate and being immigrant (I saw this referenced recently by someone, had an a-ha moment, but cannot remember where...citation help?)
- the differences in experience due to the places that one is coming from

And since my position is one of a shitload of privilege, being a white lower-middle-class person shifted between two Western English-speaking countries, one of which being the bloody USA...I gotta chew on this one for a while.

And also the issue of Anglophilia, which sometimes can drive me up.the.wall. (sorry Anglophiles.)

...OTly, I am pee-my-pants excited about my Festivids reveal later today. SO EXCITED. I have got more comments on my vid than on any fannish thing I've ever done and I am just plotzing.

Thought of the day: what would steampunk dairy farmers look like?

The Gunnerkrigg Court laser cows are all that comes to mind, most likely because I've read all of that through this past week while ill.

Right, now that I've broken away from the Story of Rhi's People...I am here to tell you that my story is ONE story of the multitude of narratives of class in the US and the world.

Because class is an inextricable factor. It may be fluid, but whomever you are, wherever you go, you are put into a social class. And being disenfranchised in some way can affect that social class. Race...well, if any US American tries to tell me that there aren't fiscal and class implications surrounding race in the US, I will tell you that you didn't pay the fuck attention in US history lectures.

Again, a disclaimer: I am trying not to fuck this up, but if I do, please let me know. Also, this is highly influenced by the Class 202 panel at WisCon.

In a nutshell: class is important, assholes should stop derailing, we need to talk without that shit. )

Class. Right. This may not be as coherently structured as I'd like, so please bear with me.

I'm going to start with a little bit of personal class narrative in this post, then do a second on analysis. If you wanna skip the first part, which is really sorta unpacking, it's cool--it's just me explaining where I'm coming from. I don't do this to try for credibility, merely to elucidate my POV and to avoid derailing much into my personal story while analysing.

a little about me. )
