Interview went well despite my headache. I was impressed that the interviewer had obviously been trained, e.g. that he asked for teaching re: genderqueer stuff but said it was only if I felt okay with doing so. I did, so it was all good.

X-Men First Class...I'm not overfond of the trailer, it's okay, but how fucking fond am I of SCREEN SF/US HISTORY CROSSOVERS? THIS MUCH. Even if it is one of the bigger dumbass moments of the 20th century.* Seriously, for some reason, US screen SF hasn't interacted much lately with real historical events, at least that I can think of. Historicity makes me happy.

Of course, that leaves so much room for it all to go wrong, and it likely will, but I will just content myself with the thought of the X-Men stopping the Bay of Pigs fiasco with MUTANT POWERS.

Speaking of history and SF, I have a whole rant started on Firefly and the US Civil War, but as it is related to fuck-all happening in fandom, I'm not sure who'd care.

Would you care? If so, lemme know.

* Which is saying something. There were a hell of a lot of them, US-wise.

The trailer for the new X-Men movie! Which I've seen people talking about from a squee position, a woe position and a 'y'know, why do we vilify the Holocaust survivor over the assimilationist model minority guy' position, ymmv.

Yeah, a Scottish dude, James McAvoy. He's been in a lot of things...though I liked him best in Children of Dune, because I am a dork. [makes mental note to add Dune to the Deconstructing Things I Like Because They Have The Fail post]

I can't help but muse on whether or not Dune or Children of Dune is more problematic...though I suppose seeing that the whole concept is appropriation, there's not much to it.

Seriously. I was hoping for a more played-up retro look (with the costumes and whatnot), but I can't help hoping First Class might have some redeeming value. It's certainly the first superhero film I've had any interest in for awhile.

I would definitely care.

Yeah, I'm a bit disappointed with the fairly quiet costuming, at least as seen, but at least it might be worth me going to see it, provided I have money again sometime.

I think it's pretty interesting, actually that the Bay of Pigs fiasco is what they're going with. (Admittedly, I am far far out of the X-Men comic-verse loop, so I'm not sure if 'canon' is a factor?) It's just not a go-to event for situating a film around these days.

Also, James McAvoy, I can live with that.

I'm curious about how Captain America is going to play out as well. I'm considerably less familiar w/Captain America, but the spouse is a fan.

There were a few films about the CMC about a decade ago (Wikipedia is saying only two?)...but Call of Duty: Black Ops features it pretty closely, which may be part of the rise in interest lately? (Or maybe people are realising just how the Cold War actually can teach us shit? I can only hope.)

I will have to write it. As I said to Sumana, I need to pull together some links so I'm not just spouting stuff without sources.
