Between [personal profile] wrdnrd's post on class and concerns about talking about it, and some discussions (and some not-discussion comments by That Someone We All Know) with regards to [personal profile] wild_irises' posts of the other day, and thinking still about what [personal profile] futuransky said at WisCon...

I think I may need to talk about class (with attention to race too) later this evening. Please be warned that there may be some unpacking, which will be behind a cut.

If, for some reason, you don't think you're interested in this, I would like to note that I am pretty sure the J2 Racefail will play into it. Because hot fuck, does class play a role in there with the racism. For that matter, I would like to say that if you don't like to get involved in uncomfortable meta but have noted the fail, that these kinds of discussions are important towards fail not happening.

I think we should all get fond of meta pretty fast.

If I flake out and don't get around to this tonight, feel free to poke me with sticks on Twitter or in comments, because this is bloody important, I think.

Just wanted to draw people's attention briefly to some more RPS fail, sadly, in bandom. This time we've got some negation of Jewish identity! And when it is pointed out, a massive derailing tone argument!

Sigh.

By the way, though [personal profile] sohotrightnow doesn't touch on it in her analysis post but did earlier, this gets into race in other ways, as Gabe Saporta is Uruguayan.

So also, of course the Latino guy is a Catholic priest. Latino people aren't Jewish, don't be silly! /sarcasm

The more I think about this, the more fucked up it gets. I got nothing. I'm off to my shrink (no, actually, I really am).

Class. Right. This may not be as coherently structured as I'd like, so please bear with me.

I'm going to start with a little bit of personal class narrative in this post, then do a second on analysis. If you wanna skip the first part, which is really sorta unpacking, it's cool--it's just me explaining where I'm coming from. I don't do this to try for credibility, merely to elucidate my POV and to avoid derailing much into my personal story while analysing.

a little about me. )

Right, now that I've broken away from the Story of Rhi's People...I am here to tell you that my story is ONE story of the multitude of narratives of class in the US and the world.

Because class is an inextricable factor. It may be fluid, but whomever you are, wherever you go, you are put into a social class. And being disenfranchised in some way can affect that social class. Race...well, if any US American tries to tell me that there aren't fiscal and class implications surrounding race in the US, I will tell you that you didn't pay the fuck attention in US history lectures.

Again, a disclaimer: I am trying not to fuck this up, but if I do, please let me know. Also, this is highly influenced by the Class 202 panel at WisCon.

In a nutshell: class is important, assholes should stop derailing, we need to talk without that shit. )
