Watched the Oscars! They were fun, though not nearly as exciting as Revolution was, so I made the right call on Sunday! Also Mom quit her job and I'm stressed about it, but not nearly as stressed as I am about my own job and how bad my numbers are because I only have one useless tech at the moment, but not stressed enough about either of those things to dampen my excitement about my upcoming vacation, now just over a week away! Though I'm also stressed about that, because travel! I sense an episode of Heated Rivalry and some Sailor Moon in my immediate future. Hopefully I remember to pay my credit card bills.

1. The other day I got an email from Shake Shack that they have a promo buy one get one free for their Korean menu items and it's expiring today, so we went down there tonight for dinner. Not sure how much longer they will have those on the menu (the person I asked last time said probably until April) but we at least got to try them one more time.

2. We wanted to stop by Sidecar Donuts for dessert afterwards, but as it turned out they close at seven on weekdays, so we missed out. But Carla was really in the mood for donuts, so we stopped at DK's on the way home and they are open 24/7, so we were able to get some donuts after all.

3. I had a last minute meeting pop today for 5:30pm, but thankfully I was able to finish my other meetings, which had to be done in person at the office, by like 3:30 and then get home to take the later meeting by web (which was with people outside our company and would have been by web anyway even if I'd been at the office). It ended up going over an hour, so I would have hated to be stuck at work until almost seven and then still have a half hour drive home.

4. It's exhausting work being a kitty!

AEW's last PPV before the next one that I will be attending was last night, and it was a good 'un! I'm still mad that I had to miss the Oscars just to watch it, but I certainly do not regret doing so. At least four solid MotY contenders in the mix, though none of them were surprises in that respect. TO THE CUT!!!

While he was quite surprised to walk out for his morning on-leash ablutions into heavy snow above his knees, he's really starting to relax.

This morning I reached down to stroke his back and he didn't flinch.

Just now I was resting on the floor by his bed, petting his back. I started to scritch the scruff of his neck, and he relaxed even more, his dark eyes shining up at MyGuy behind the camera. (I'm reclining on my tripled-up exercise pad just behind him, shockingly without glasses.)

I don't usually update on the weekends anymore, but I'm riding high on getting to see some MOVIES BUT BIG again, so why not. The Lord of the Rings extended editions marathon at Keyano was awesome, even if my knees and ass were very sore by the end of it all (I got super high for The Two Towers, which mitigated a lot of the pain on day 2, thankfully). Hopefully they get some more screenings in to continue to fill the giant hole in the community's heart left by the continued closure of the movie theatre. I feel... healed, somewhat.

Today's SPECIAL BONUS joshi match while I wait for my hair to dry and get settled in for Revolution in two hours is Sareee vs. Arisa Nakajima from the SEAdLINNNG 8th Anniversary show. I will probably never get into watching SEAdLINNNG very much, because that would necessitate typing SEAdLINNNG more than I currently do, but this match is baller.

Okay, time to down a couple of edibles, order Wok Box, and light candles for the Old Man Yaoi return prayer circle. I don't know what's all going to go down at Revolution tonight, but I know it'll be a ride. And then I guess I'll just watch the Oscars after work tomorrow or something???? Fuck!!!

Happy Saturday!

I'm going to be doing a little maintenance today. It will likely cause a tiny interruption of service (specifically for www.dreamwidth.org) on the order of 2-3 minutes while some settings propagate. If you're on a journal page, that should still work throughout!

If it doesn't work, the rollback plan is pretty quick, I'm just toggling a setting on how traffic gets to the site. I'll update this post if something goes wrong, but don't anticipate any interruption to be longer than 10 minutes even in a rollback situation.

I have worked. Uh. A lot. Over the past three weeks. o_o But now it's the weekend, and I don't currently have a rewrite to work on, and March Break lies ahead; the spring crunch isn't finished, but it's on hiatus for the week, and a normal workweek is a breath of fresh air at this point. (Also I'm taking a couple of days off during it.)

Yesterday work wrapped up early enough that I had an actual evening, so I was finally able to start Butterfly Effects, the fifteenth (!) InCryptid book. ("Finally" is a bit of a stretch, I guess, since it's still the release week, but this is a Sarah-narrated book. Mostly. SARAH.)

So my hopes for the weekend are pretty much: avoid napping (I don't find naps restorative and feel groggier after than before I started); finish reading Butterfly Effects; watch this week's The Pitt and hopefully the temporarily-streaming production of The Importance of Being Earnest with [personal profile] scruloose; get [personal profile] scruloose to redo my undercut; and (also with [personal profile] scruloose) do a second round of advance-prepping ten or so bags of the dry ingredients for my breakfast banana bread while also baking up a new batch of loaves. I think that last will also require decanting cinnamons from bags into jars, so maybe we'll manage a bit of other spice decanting/sorting while we're at it.

I MADE IT TO FRIDAY. I only have one used tech for the next week and am completely buried in units that need to be inspected, but we've managed to get broadly on top of the sold ones, at least, so I'm hoping today will be a little more chill than things have been of late. The fact that I'm able to write this entry in the morning is a good sign!

Eddie Kingston and Ortiz announced for MLP/ROH in Windsor. Taka Michinoku announced for Mystery Wrestling in Edmonton. KENTA announced for Mystery Wrestling in Vancouver. This vacation is going to heal me, I just know it. Also I'll be in proximity to working movie theatres again! Kicking into ~ cinema ~ mode the second I clock out today for today and tomorrow's LotR EE marathon down at Keyano -- hopefully that will make up for missing the Oscars in favour of Revolution on Sunday. Old man yaoi Edge & Christian returning then will also heal me (it's one year after Christian screwed him for the world title in last year's main-event-that-should-not-have-been-the-main-event! Dynasty will be one year since FTR turned heel on Cope and they'll probably still have the belts in a month! Nick Wayne is finally back in action! ALL THE PIECES ARE IN PLACE).

Today's lunchtime joshi match will be a long-haul, Sareee & KAIRI vs. Arisa Nakajima & Takumi Iroha from Sareee-ISM Chapter II. Kinda wish I hadn't blown my weekly burrito taxi budget on horrible little dough balls yesterday so I could get a wrap or something to eat with it, but alas. They were so good, though. Anyway, I really need to dig into Sareee's self-produced shows, they seem like banger factories!

On his second day, Shadow wandered into our bedroom and leapt up on the bed. I made my creaky crane eh-eh sound which is the closest I get to saying "no" to a dog and he hopped right off. (Clearly, he's had some training.)

This morning we were resting in bed and he stood in our bedroom doorway. I said "Shadow come!" and he stepped inside! And wagged his tail! and then immediately turned around and went back to his crate.

But his tail can wag.

Another day, another bunch of annoying shit added to the duties I'm already absolutely drowning in. God, I hope this is just a particularly busy spell and not the new normal. And then as soon as I get home, Mom will proceed to dump all of HER work stresses on me, too, and aaaaaagh. It's not that I don't like listening to problems or venting, it's just that it's WORK. Stop CARING so much about it when you're not AT WORK. I don't talk about my job at all when I'm not here, because I'm not paid to care about this shit when I'm not here! But she just spends all her free time replaying and relitigating all of her frustrations ad nauseum and it's driving her crazy, and she's driving me crazy in turn! She's back to talking about going on temporary disability leave to get out of it, so we'll see how that all turns out. Vacation still cannot come soon enough (less than two weeks!). The Fellowship of the Rings at Keyano tomorrow. I think I'm going to need to order some horrible little dough balls from Papa John's tonight to carry me through until then.

Album #522/1001: Richard Hawley - Coles Corner )

Today's lunchtime joshi match was Mei Suruga vs. Mei Seira from ChocoPro #452; some playful, high-speed silliness after yesterday's hard-hitting badassery. Mei Suruga is three apples tall and I would die for her, and Mei Seira's entrance music remains an insane earworm.

A French children's book in translation from 1961, in which five children are trapped in a cottage by a landslide.

14-year-old Laurent's family is concerned that he spends all his time reading and doing chemistry experiments, and isn't engaging with other people. So they dispatch him to stay with his younger brother and sister in a cottage only occupied by a 14-year-old girl and her younger brother, who are alone because her mother is having surgery. The idea is that Laurent will have to take care of the other kids, and this will make him come out of his shell more. His parents do leave him the out of being able to pack up his siblings and return to Paris if he really hates it.

I am honestly not sure if it was even vaguely normal in 60s France for five kids ages 14-5 to stay alone in a remote mountain cottage for ten days, or if this was just a literary convention. Anyway, Laurent unsurprisingly hates it and packs up his siblings to leave. But while they're on the train platform with the other kids, he has a change of heart and they all head back to the cottage. But they stop in the cottage of a family friend, who is out at the time.

It gets buried in a landslide! They're all trapped in pitch darkness! In an only vaguely familiar house! They can't use the stove because it already nearly suffocated them with carbon monoxide! Their only air is from a narrow shaft leading to a giant canyon! There's very little food! No one knows they're in trouble because one of the kids wrote ten postcards dated for every day of the vacation, then arranged with the post office to send one per day!

The kids having to do everything in total darkness for most of the book is a really cool twist on this sort of "trapped in a space" book. (One of my favorite moments is when enough dirt slides away that some light gets in, and they see that they've been half-starved in pitch darkness with two huge hams and a lantern hanging from the ceiling.) It has some cozy elements - they're trapped with goats, which they can milk but which also get into everything and poop everywhere, and one goat gives birth to twin kids - but gets desperate quickly when Laurent gets an infected cut and the main milking goat drowns in a flooded cellar. But it all ends up okay when they first signal with Morse code in a mirror (in a nice touch of realism, it takes a long time for anyone to figure out the message as the kids get some of the letters wrong, including signaling OSO instead of SOS) and then make and set off gunpowder!

Not an enduring classic, but an entertaining read.
