don't stop believin' (but I did long ago)
Okay, so I have not watched Glee for a myriad of reasons, namely:
- my issues with the portrayal of disability and trans issues oh my god
- my hatred of non-ironic and excessive applications of Autotune
- the sheer unbelievable nature of these people being in high school
- they ruined Journey, then did a whole fucking Fleetwood Mac show wtf
But there was a reason I didn't watch it in the first place before that shit hit the fan, and I have just figured out why:
Having been a theatre techie (and second alto) in high school, why the FUCK would I ever want to be rooting for Rachel and Kurt?
I knew kids like Rachel and Kurt. They were arrogant, self-absorbed, entitled assholes...well, okay, more arrogant, self-absorbed and entitled than the average teenager, and for them and everyone else, this was OKAY because it was about the music or the show, about art. Not bad people, not cruel, but they only gave a shit about the big picture to the extent that it was a reflection of them.
In a word: divas.
The last thing I wanted to relive in a television show was not only the abuse and crap that came with being a geek before that was cool, but the hierarchy that kept me down even within the group that was tolerant of me.
Just a bit of food for thought.
