Minor operations; testing new serving path

Hi all!

I'm doing some minor operational work tonight. It should be transparent, but there's always a chance that something goes wrong. The main thing I'm touching is testing a replacement for Apache2 (our web server software) in one area of the site.

Thank you!

Daily Happiness

1. I had a nice work from home day today. Carla had an appointment and some errands late morning, but when she got back we walked up to our new favorite pizza place for lunch. They do a nice lunch special that's two slices and a drink, and it's a good amount for sharing.

2. We actually had pizza again for dinner, but it was homemade pizza, something we rarely do. The dough was just from Trader Joe's, not from scratch, but Carla made her own pizza sauce so that it didn't have garlic and onions in the seasoning, and for toppings we used Korean BBQ flavor spam and roasted corn (also from Trader Joe's; they have delicious frozen roasted corn, which we always keep on hand). I meant to put edamame, too, but didn't get everything prepped in time. It was soooo good. For some reason the crust didn't get that crispy on the bottom, but it wasn't soggy or anything, and the general texture was really good and tasted great, too. Would definitely get this dough again, and we have leftover sauce, so I think we'll be making it again soon (this time with edamame).

3. We have so many posters and paintings and stuff we want to hang on the walls, but just never do it because I hate hanging stuff on the walls lol. I'm bad at getting it just right, and while I don't care about making extra holes in the house, since the walls are already a lost cause, I'm hesitant about the garage with it's nice new walls. But I ordered a painting hanging kit thingie that has a level and it makes marks in the wall to show you where to put the nails, so hopefully that will help me get all this stuff up on display finally.

4. Tuxie! This pic is from the other day and he's currently off wandering again (didn't show up at all today), so I hope he'll be waiting at the back porch tomorrow morning for breakfast.

Daily Happiness

1. I stopped at the car wash on the way to work this morning and it looks much better now. Thankfully the trees on our street have stopped shedding berries the way they were a couple weeks ago, but there's still a ton of dust from the construction site at the end of the street, so it was very dusty even though I have been getting it washed like every week. D:

2. Looking at my work tasks and meetings and I think I will be able to work from home most or all of the rest of the week.

3. Look at those toes!

I FORGOT TO MENTION

Artorias is a DLC boss.

Beating the final boss of Dark Souls puts you straight into New Game Plus, so you need to do the DLC first, but yeah. I have in fact completed the base game up until you enter the last area. And there is a general consensus that the final boss is not the hardest in the game.

The DLC bosses are all substantially harder than the base game ones, and I have two more left, so it remains to be seen whether I can beat them, but at this point the odds look decent that I will at least be able to finish the base game.

I would like to remind you all that my initial goal was to see if I could beat the tutorial.

Work is crazy, but life goes on! Also various wrestling companies keep announcing additional Canadian dates that line up with my vacation time so I keep having to move things around??? TJPW tickets (two dates during Dynasty weekend) on sale tomorrow, Mystery Wrestling 23 in Edmonton on Thursday. AND THEN THAT'S IT. I gotta start booking the actual travel! Gonna be a crazy couple of weeks!

Theatre still closed. Trying to be optimistic about it this month!

Got a new pair of open earbuds for work so I can wear two instead of just one and have been catching up on KEXP live sessions while I deal with the insane neverending onslaught of sold units and ridiculous sales requests and warranty nonsense. Which I should get back to now!

1. Final sales total for the new store yesterday was off the charts and today looks like it will be just as high.

2. The other day we were browsing GrubHub for something to eat and saw a burger place that looked really good, but decided it would be better to go in person as one of the big draws was their loaded fries, which would just be soggy on arrival. We went over there today for lunch and it was so good!

Karaage chicken sandwich with jalapeño yuzu slaw and sweet potato fries on the side.

Yakiniku steak fries, which were supposed to be with tater tots but they were out of tots so just regular fries, but still super tasty.

It was so much food but so good. Brought half the sweet potato fries and half the loaded fries home and Alex ate them this afternoon when she came over.

3. For some reason Chloe was so into exploring this Disney bag yesterday when we got home from the park lol. Nothing inside it but she had to investigate.

(no subject)

I manage to drop my iPod classic and break the plastic bezel around the charging port :(

I'm hoping that won't become a problem (it still charges and transfers data fine so far). It looks like the part itself is easily found, but I don't want to open my iPod and risk breaking something else in the process. I'm wondering if getting a cover for the port might be a good idea (it seems the main point of the bezel was to keep dust out).

Weekly proof of life: media intake | impending weather | manga work

One link, which hopefully won't be paywalled: "Rachel Reid's wild Heated Rivalry ride" at The Globe and Mail. The whole "local girl makes good" element of the HR show taking over the world is a very nice cherry on top of the whole thing, and I really liked this profile.

Reading: I'm maybe 30% into Matt Dinniman's Dungeon Crawler Carl and wavering about continuing. I've gotten better about DNFing things, and this time I actually have the book out of the library, so the good old financial sunk-cost fallacy isn't in play. But I still don't like DNFing.

I've also read some more of Braiding Sweetgrass and reread vol. 2 of The Kurosagi Corpse Delivery Service.

Watching: Crunchyroll wasn't in the mood to work when we attempted to watch last week's ep. of Frieren, so we're two episodes behind on that. (Annoyingly, Netflix keeps saying it thinks we'd love the show, but only has season 1.) Hopefully we'll get caught up on the most recent ep. of The Pitt tonight.

On top of those currently-running things, we're now one episode into Midnight Mass.

Playing: Cult of the Lamb: Woolhaven continues to delight me.

Weathering: There's another storm heading in, due to arrive tonight, but it looks like it's veered enough that our local forecast is now for a somewhat more reasonable amount of snow than I'd been hearing before yesterday evening or so. Apparently it's also bringing fairly high winds, so there's the usual "will the power stay on?" worry. (Our neighborhood has been really lucky on that front this season, and [personal profile] scruloose and I are pretty well prepared, so it's not a huge worry.)

Working: I turned in the final volume (!) of Pet Shop of Horrors on Friday and immediately tried to switch to the next volume of Now That We Draw, since that's due mid-week, but my brain was Not Having It; I suspect it was the sheer tonal dissonance as much as anything. But then yesterday, what with the storm warning and all, I basically did the last four-fifths of the book in one sitting to make sure I at least had a workable draft, and now my brain is pretty crisped. (It's not a very text-heavy or tricky rewrite, and the translators make it pretty painless, so four-fifths is a lot at once but not the feat it would be with some series.)

So now I have a draft with just a couple tweaks still to be made and a final read-through to be done, and I'm tempting fate a bit by not trying to get that all off my plate today, but I think letting it rest for a day before reviewing it is extra important given that I did the draft so fast. So I'm gambling a bit, but also have something I can submit with caveats if need be, if we do lose power for three days or something.

Sleeping: Sleep has been distinctly Not Great for the last few (?) nights. I've been doing decently at getting to bed in a timely fashion and mostly not taking forever to fall asleep, but I've been having even weirder and more stressful dreams than usual and it's all been very restless.

1. It looks like the weather's supposed to get a little cooler for the next few days, though it'll be up in the 80s again mid week. D: But there's a possibility of rain by the end of the week after, so hopefully things'll cool off a little. Not a fan of this weather!

2. Despite the heat, we had a really nice lunch at Disneyland today. Low crowds and delicious food.

3. I started playing this browser-based matching game that [personal profile] aethel linked to yesterday and it's fun but also addictive lol. You have to group a bunch of random words/phrases/names and some of the groupings are very similar to each other and also sometimes what you think the grouping is turns out to not exactly be right.

4. I normally don't check my work phone much during the weekend, but I have been keeping an eye on the sales figures coming in from the grand opening. As of 8pm they've already blown past the sales for the Irvine grand opening, which was a huge success. Closing is officially 9pm but there were still lines outside last I heard, so I think they're going to try and let as many people in as possible, even if they have to stay late.

5. Such a judgy Gemma.

2026 Disneyland Trip #7 (1/31/26)

We said we were going to go to Disneyland less frequently this year and it feels like we've kept to that, and yet we still somehow went seven times this month lol. But it's mostly down to the way the days landed, since there were five weekends. We only had two weeks where we went more than once a week.
