Much as I hate authorial intent, Nolan as a screenwriter isn't cheap; he vastly prefers to complicate things (leading to plot holes), and I think a cheap answer sort of ruins the effort.

Other people's mileage may, of course, vary.

I do care fannishly, but I don't like the characters, to be honest, for the most part. So that feels...alienating.
